Starter locs

The “ugly stage”? Doesn’t exist. Starter locs are the beginning of something beautiful—and the foundation matters. That’s why I always ask, “How do you want your parts?” Your parting grid shapes how your locs mature and how your styles look down the road.

Too many people fall out of love with their locs because they started with a weak foundation and didn’t know their options. Then they feel stuck—thinking the only way to fix it is to cut it all off.

And listen, I’m not opposed to that option—I’ll cut my hair quick and start my locs all over again every time. I loveeeee starter locs! Personally, I think it’s the cutest stage of the journey.

The most common method is comb coils with square parts, but it’s not one-size-fits-all. Do your research: explore parting styles, loc sizes, techniques, and understand your hair texture.
